A few years ago I wanted to pursue Social Work and become a therapist to help people find clarity in their lives. Maybe to help them realize the changes they could make in their own responsibilities. After moving within American Express and seeing the “bigger picture,” I felt I could do similar work with people that want to develop in their career without the irrational concerns.
Career development became a way I would be able to help employees find clarity in their career path and help them make changes that would impact their work and home lives. I found it depressing to read Lindemans chapter titled “For Those Who Need to Be Learners,” because of the opening paragraph that refers to many people now that may still be using the “intellectual coins of his college days; he will find difficulty in reading serious books; he will become inured to the jargon of his particular profession and will affect decision for all “highbrows.” As Lindeman continued I wanted to follow the steps necessary to help others put meaning in life through their personal development in the workplace. I want to ensure every employee is striving for meaning in their career that will in turn support their core motivation for working.
In sum I feel like my job is to help people find education in every meeting, class, hallway conversation and development session to help them improve their work experience, and ultimately improve their quality of life outside of the workplace through their knowledge.
What are some ways that you do this with your students?
What do you do to continue your education that applies in the workplace and home?

I totally agree with what you said about trying to help people learn and find clarity in their lives. People are also a lot more fun to work with if they are open to learning new things and can handle change.
To answer your first question, I try to be a good listener. Sometimes people don't need you to give them advice about everything they may just be verbally processing. I find that if I am patient normally they will ask what I think. If not then hopefully it helped them process the information. I also try to ask a lot of questions. Especially with my students. Instead of just giving them the answers I ask them pointed questions that will help them come to a conclusion on their own.
